Newbie Part 25

Part 25
I walked into the jimusho the next morning, to everyone’s surprise. They thought I would be taking a few days off following my injury. I didn’t feel like I had the right to; I just thought I would be fine with crutches.
At first, everyone stared at me, then they all raced to help me out. “Sayu-chan, I’ll carry you/Give me your crutches and hold onto me for support/You shouldn’t have come today, you got hurt”
I stopped walking, then I turned around and walked out without a second look at the crowd. The crowd? They just stared at me, “Sayu…..chan”
When Ya-Ya-yah went back to their dressing room, they were shocked to find me there as well.
“A-re? Didn’t you leave?”
“I went through the back door; less crowded” I replied not looking up from my laptop. Then, the rest of Ya-Ya-yah laughed really loudly, making me look at them. I stood up and walked to the bathroom, just when the other juniors came in and asked what’s wrong.
Ya-Ya-yah knew that they were too loud, so they just said, “Nothing, we’re just laughing at Hikaru’s joke”
“Oh” and the other juniors headed back to their respective rooms. The toilet flushed and I came out. I found the rest of the group staring at me, “What?”
Without waiting for a reply, I walked back slowly to my laptop. “Dammit” I muttered suddenly, making everyone in the room tense. “What?!” I shouted into the phone. A pause. “Un, okay…yeah, see you” more quietly.
“Nani ga atta?”
I looked at them again and sighed, “Iya, nan demo nai” I went back to work.
Shoon approached and sat down next to me, “You’re only watching doramas? I thought you’re busy with something”
“I am busy! I’m busy watching doramas! Now shut it!” and I went back to fixing my eyes on the screen.
“Sayuko…” Shoon looked at me sadly.
Without looking up, I said with annoyance, “What is it now?!” Then I looked at his sad face and put my hand on his shoulder, “Don’t be sad! I’m just………” I trailed off, not able to understand why I’m grumpy these days, “Gomen” I sideways-hugged Shoon just to make him feel better and stood up. I crutched outside just when Yuto came.
“A-re? I thought you left” the eleven-year-old said. I didn’t stop to answer his concern so Yuto called from behind me, “JOHNNY-SAN WANTS TO SEE YOU!” and headed into Ya-Ya-yah’s dressing room to ask what’s up with me.
In Johnny’s office
“Sayuko, why are you here?”
“Shigoto desu. Is it not okay with an injured leg?”
“Well, we still need you to dance”
“Hai”
“So don’t come back until you can dance”
“I can dance now!”
“Without limping?”
I looked down at the ground, “Hai, without limping”
After joining with the group
“Ya-Ya-yah, you’re on the Shokura again two weeks from now” Johnny-san looked at me worriedly. Then, he left.
“Jyaa, let’s go practice!” Yabu said eagerly, making everyone’s spirits high. They all cheered as they ran toward our usual practice room.
I looked at them hopelessly with tears streaming down my face, really wanting to participate as well. My crutches were suddenly snatched away by a person behind me. I fell, because I had been relying on them to stand, and I turned around to see Johnny-san standing looking down at me with his arms folded, and Keith holding my crutches.
“I thought you said you’d dance even when you’re injured? That’s the condition you gave me to allow you to be here still” Johnny-san asked me
“No crutches for you!~” Keith said, meaning to be playful to bring up the mood.
I stood up and started walking toward the direction of the rehearsal room… without my crutches. At first, I limped.
Keith asked Johnny-san, “Isn’t she supposed to walk normally?”
“Eh, we’ll let her off this time. She needs to take things slowly” and they nodded, looking at me with a smile on their faces.
