“Thanks for dinner”
“You’re welcome. Ne, Sayuko, make sure you keep coming to us for help if you don’t feel good in this jimusho, okay?”
“Yeah, I will” My smile turned into a smirk as my eyes made contact with Shoon’s.
“What’s so funny?” Kame looked from me to Shoon, and back again.
“Nan demo nai” we said in unison, and laughed.
Kame rolled his eyes and said jokingly, “Fine, whatever. Don’t tell me then. Just hope by the next time you ask me to treat you, I’ve forgotten about this” Everyone laughed, and then he said, “Ok, time to go home. Sayuko, where do you live?”
“Um, I live close, don’t worry. I’ll go now”
“Iya, either Shoon or I am going to accompany you” Kame added smilingly after my hesitation, “Or we can BOTH accompany you if you want”
“Daijoubu. I’ve been out late at night before. Don’t worry about me” I insisted.
Kame wouldn’t give up “No, at least one of us is going with you. End of discussion”
“Fine, jyaa, ikou yo”
<At shigoto the next day>
“Kamenashi-kun, Shoon-kun and Iwata Shin-chan please come to my office”
Our bubbly personality from last night hasn’t disappeared yet, and Johnny-san could definitely tell. However… we didn’t realize that.
“HOW COULD YOU GUYS BE OUT SO LATE AT NIGHT?! WHAT IF THERE ARE STALKERS OUT THERE?!”
All three of us froze as we got lectured by Johnny-san about our violating the rules.
<Meanwhile…>
“Anou, where is Sayuko at right now?” Kayla asked the front desk.
“Sayuko? You mean Iwata-kun?” a voice said behind her. Kayla turned around and saw Yuto, the boy she met a few weeks earlier, in front of her.
“Yeah, Iwata Sayuko”
“She’s in Johnny-san’s office right now”
“Did she get promoted or something?”
“Promoted?” Yuto laughed, “No way, she’s getting B-U-S-T-E-D right now” and Yuto laughed some more while walking away to his next lesson.
“Chotto, what do you mean, she’s getting busted? What did she do?”
“You didn’t know? She was out late last night at dinner with two other guys and someone caught them and told Johnny-san.”
“WHERE IS SHE NOW THEN?” Kayla roared.
Taken aback, Yuto pointed in the direction of Johnny-san’s office.
Kayla ran in that direction, and Yuto, behind her, put his hand up to his forehead, and made a gesture of wiping his forehead, “whew.” Kayla came back and dragged the surprised Yuto to lead the way.
Outside the door, Kayla could clearly see Sayuko, her best friend, inside with her head down and with two guys; one of them she met the day they came for interview. When Sayuko saw her through the window, Kayla made a cold face and walked away swiftly. Sayuko, seeing that, lifted her head and all of a sudden, Johnny-san’s voice faded away. She rushed out the door, not hearing Johnny’s yells.
“KAYLA! MATTE”
Kayla stopped abruptly, and slapped me. Then, she yelled back, “WHY SHOULD I?! YOU’RE SO HAPPY IN THE JIMUSHO NOW AND YOU’RE ABLE TO STAY UP LATE WITH TWO GUYS AND GET YELLED AT BY JOHNNY-SAN HIMSELF ALL THE WHILE NOT TALKING TO ME OR ANSWERING MY CALLS!! OH YEAH, IWATA-SAMA I FORGOT YOU DON’T NEED ME ANYMORE NOW THAT YOU’RE AN IDOL. FORGIVE ME, I’D FORGOTTEN”
“CHOTTO MATTE YO! THAT’S NOT IT AND YOU KNOW IT”
“ALL I KNOW IS THAT YOU’RE NEGLECTING ME, IWATA-SAMA”
“KAYLA, CUT IT OUT! AND STOP WITH THE FORMALITIES!” I took a deep breath and said, “Fine, I’ll stop.” Turning around I went inside Johnny-san’s office, bowed at the three men, and said, “Watashi, yameru. Moushi wake gozaimasen deshita” I said especially to Kame, whom I’ve betrayed. I stood back up and left.
“Sayu-chan, stop! I didn’t mean it that way!” Kayla chased after me, hoping I would go back.
“THEN WHAT DO YOU MEAN?! First you yell at me for trying to fit in, and now you’re saying you don’t mean for me to quit! What do you mean then?! You, of all people, should know how much I need and love you! You’ve been with me all my life! And you’ve always been there for me whenever I need you! What more do you need to hear from me to understand that you’re one of the most important people in my life?!” Tears rolled down my face as I remembered all the good times I’ve had with my best friend. She, after all, was the one who got me into the jimusho. I was afraid it was going to end right then and there.
I felt someone embrace me. “Sayu-chan. Gomen. I didn’t mean it that way. Go get your job back! I was just worried about you. I thought something terrible had happened. I’m just glad you’re fitting in. I shouldn’t have bothered you with all my calls”
“No, I’m quitting.” Kayla, a whole 10cm shorter, looked up at me. “Nande?”
“I don’t want you to feel that way anymore. I’ve been so busy trying to remember the dance moves and everything. Kayla, I’m lonely. I don’t know what to do.” I cried some more into her shoulder.
“Iiyo, just get your job back and I’ll help you remember them”
“Iya, I remember them perfectly. It’s just that it takes me so much time I have no time to do anything else.”
“Dakara, I’ll help you ne” Kayla reassured me.
“I’m losing all my time with you, kaasan, Miyu-nee, Miki-nee, and Sakiko” I cried even louder at the fact. “I want my life back! I don’t want to be an idol anymore; I want to be Iwata Sayuri, and not Iwata Shingo! Onegai, Kayla, don’t make me stay”
“Sayu-chan. Gomen, demo you’re staying. Johnny-san would pick you out of thousands of other kids is because he sees your potential. Johnny-san no koto, shinjite kudasai”
“YADA YO~~~”
We were outside for another five minutes before Kayla said to me, “Chotto matte” and came out of Johnny-san’s office a minute later, saying “Let’s go home”
OH NO, DID SAYUKO REALLY QUIT JE?!
